Born from a riot
After Babri Masjid riots, a young boy was returning from
school when he was attacked by religious extremists. He was 14. Scared, he ran
away to PoK hoping to join an extremist group. But the violent reality hit him
and he returned to Mumbai. But he was arrested again, this time on grounds of
militant intent. He was beaten, tortured and jailed for 6 years in Tihar Jail.
This did not stop him from pursuing studies. He took up law and started
practicing independently. He could not tolerate injustice especially when innocent
youth were arrested for terrorist activities. He defended such helpless victims
who could not afford an expensive lawyer. He was dealing important cases and
one of them was the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai when one night, he was shot dead in
his office.
This man was Shahid Azmi, a young lawyer from Mumbai
murdered at a young age of 33 years for being the savior of the poor. This
is the state of honest, smart and some of the bravest men and women of India. Their
only mistake was to defend the weak and suppressed.
Seven years after his assassination, the accused are still at large, roaming freely.
